ID: 2416   Lake Tarawera, Rotorua
Lake Tarawera 144 Spencer Road Spencer Lodge River stone pillars signal the entrance, cherry trees heavy with blossom line the driveway but nothing quite prepares the visitor to Spencer Lodge for the sheer beauty of the setting that enfolds them as they step out of their car or helicopter. All around them is a scene alive with nothing more demanding than the sound of birdsong from the native bush, or the occasional low from the picturesque Highland cattle in the fifteen lush hectare below the landscaped gardens, while the majestic views of the fishermans paradise, Lake Tarawera, promise them nothing short of the holiday of a lifetime. It's hard to believe it's only fifteen minutes from Rotorua Airport and the world. The Lodge itself does not disappoint. From the moment the visitor walks through the imposing front door it demonstrates a level of commitment seldom seen but often wished for in the hospitality business. It's hard to decide which area is the most impressive, but it's fair to say the double height grandeur of the formal living room could be described as a knockout. Juxtaposed against the majesties of the New Zealand natural world outside the window the effect created by the floor to ceiling river stone fireplace, hand built, custom designed oak furniture and English chintz is staggering. But if it's tranquil peace you want, the cosy intimacy of the mezzanine area above provides just the place to relax in an armchair with a book and a glass. Dining inside is a pleasant experience amongst the glowing colours of either the formal or informal dining rooms, but outside under the stars in the sheltered garden courtyard it can be sublime. And after dinner, papering yourself in your luxurious ensuite before falling asleep in one of the four opulent bedrooms, even if you haven't had time to unwind in the spa pool in the grounds below, is just more unadulterated pleasure. The property allows scope for development with space for more residences to be built in the grounds. This could provide a gated community for those residents who want to blend total privacy with absolute comfort, or just more room for lucky visitors to enjoy the best of boutique accommodation that the country has to offer.
